BASF Australia joins the bagMUSTER® program to drive sustainable practices in agriculture

BASF has recently joined Australia’s first industry-led collection and recycling program, bagMUSTER, for soft plastic agricultural input bags. Led by CropLife Australia and operated by AgSafe, this initiative is aimed at helping the agricultural industry recycle single-use polypropylene (PP) bags used for fertilisers, seeds, grain, stock feed, and pet food.  By being one of the foundational partners of this initiative, BASF demonstrates its commitment to sustainability in agriculture.

Phase 1 of bagMUSTER commenced early 2025 with more than 25 collection sites currently open in Western Victoria. All eligible bags purchased from participating retailers in Victoria after October 1, 2024, are able to be recycled through the bagMUSTER program. This includes BASF’s InVigor® series seed bags. BASF’s channel partners, including Nutrien Ag Solutions, Elders, Muirs, and Platinum Ag Services, are among the participating retailers.

Prior to this program, BASF had already participated in drumMUSTER® program, which promotes sustainability through the collection and recycling of eligible, empty, and clean agricultural and veterinary chemical containers. Building on the success of drumMUSTER, the bagMUSTER program serves as an extended effort to now promote recycling of single use plastic input bags within the agricultural sector.

Parvana Wali, Head of Agricultural Solutions for Australia and New Zealand at BASF, stated, “We are excited to join forces with AgSafe once again to lead the movement in reducing single use plastic waste and provide farmers and growers with a convenient and eco-friendly solution. While we are only in Phase 1 of the program, this initiative can only grow in impact. I personally believe what we do as a network of connected will positively impact the environment and promote sustainable practices within the agricultural community.”

When fully implemented, bagMUSTER is expected to divert up to 45,000 tonnes of single-use soft plastic from landfills each year. To learn more about bagMUSTER, find collection sites, visit the  bagMUSTER website.
